The origin of prondonicles quoted here seems unlikely. I have heard and used the term since well before 1990; probably as long ago as 1981. Elsewhere on this forum there's a reference to the word in a Graham Wills-Johnson article in the Melbourne Bushwalkers magazine dating back to 1974. (whynotwalk - forum member based in Tasmania)
