a day walk,
separated from his companion,
and little water.

Yeah it's always incredible how fast you can die from dehydration/heat exhaustion in the bush. I've never undertaken a long hike by 30+ weather, but I've had dehydration episodes in the bush.Your mouth is dry, tastes funny, and you become slightly delirious and anxious. Very easy in that situation to take a wrong turn unfortunately. Luckily for me it happened in Croajingolong where you just follow the coastline and there's no way to get lost, plus I wasn't far from my car with extra water there. He was 750 m from his car, too bad he didn't have GPS...

That time of year if you're going to walk almost anywhere in Aus, you take plenty of water and some sort of electrolyte.
