Lunch - a list of engery density/cost, carbs, etc.

Hi,

There are lots of threads containing information and ideas on this subject. But no easy way to compare things. :(

So I have made a start here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing ... it should be open for all to edit - please add things in roughly the same order? You may need a google account - sorry about that.

The idea is to have an easy comparison of basic items ... for example the Base;

Oat cakes and crackers are highest in energy density, Tortillas/mountain bread are less energy dense.

The dehydration ratio is 1 for stuff that has not been dehydrated. Other numbers reflect the weight change from dehydrated to re-hydrated, or the other way around as a rough indication.

The last 2 columns are the product as packed (not served), calculated from the entered data. I expect some variation between brands of, say, 10% and a variation in price from time to time. Not too worried about either, consider them to indicators with product 'variation'.

The pack density of kJ/cc is not done. It should reflect the size of the product. {edit} Thought about this. Backpack sizes are in litres so it make sense to have the pack density in kJ/litre. {/edit}

The product packaging in not reflected here, most products would be repacked anyway. Some would be purchased in sealed packs, these should be selected for minimum package weight - alfoil pouches rather than tins for instance.

There is no recommendation on the items, just the energy density/cost comparison. Anything else is left to the user.

I have other spreadsheets for breakfast, snacks, dinner .. but they need some work - mainly on the dehydration thing and many additions.

{edit}
Beverages is there ... not complete ... needs tang etc. Link is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Would be nice to have some comments? {/edit}

Not a bad list. I found some Delis have better crackers, better tasting and more variety of grains. The other thing I like for lunch, which a lot of people don't, is plastic Cheese, Pico, Laughing Cow ect.

Humm ... someone mucked up one of the tables...
So ...
I have made 2 files types;
* 'view only' so you can look and copy without fear of changing things
* 'editable' for those that want to add things or see how things are calculated

The 'view only' files are;

Lunch https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
Beverages https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
Breakfast https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

The 'editable' files are

Lunch https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
Beverages https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

These files could become corrupted (accidentally or deliberately) so the 'view only' files should remain usable in mean time.
Humm .. I may rethink this to make a simple editable file for additions only - this way people can enter additions into this file and I then transfer them over to the 'view only' files ... more secure from unwelcome changes?

I have made a backup to make restoration easier for me. Think that should help.

While I am definitely in the gram counter category, I think people can get a bit obsessed with extracting maximum energy for minimum weight - I am dead against soylent. For some/many of us food adds to our enjoyment of being in the outdoors. As well as nutritious it should be tasty, varied and suitable for the conditions being experienced. For walks of up to a week it really doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it - the body will handle any deficits.

Yes, I too like to enjoy my food. :) But I am trying to look at longer walks, or consecutive walks that may be longer than one week.

So I gather ideas on food that people use and compare on an energy density scale.

The appeal of things will vary from one person to another .. but most 'cheeses' will have about the same energy density - I choose the cheese that suits me.

I'm not much of a porridge person but muesli is comparable. And muesli bars can do the job too if you want a walking lunch without cooking and/or a fast getaway. Energy wise these are all good substitutes.

Ok. A rough dinner list. I have changed the order and a term.

The calculated energy/cost and energy/weight comes before the nutritional data. This gives emphases to the data you don't get off the packets.

The term Specific Energy has been used for the energy/weight ration- this is technically correct but commonly abused.

viewable only https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

editable - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Any thoughts on the order and data so far?

Well, I appreciate the humour, MarkF.

I wasn't aware there was an actual product named soylent - I trust it's not green !

bernieq - you are on the mark, soylent is a product but not made from soy and lentils. Worth doing a bit of a google on soylent. There is a 1973 sci-fi movie "Soylent Green" in which the ever expanding population was fed soylent (made from soy beans and lentils) but with the added ingredient of humans. Would love to see the movie.

I've not read the novel (quite different plot, I believe) but I've watched the film twice; 1st time was great, 2nd time it had dated but still worth watching.

I'm still wondering why a current-day commercial enterprise would choose 'soylent' as the product name. Yes, yes, soya & lentils, but the word was publicised by a film that used dead people as it's major ingredient !?

A google on 'Soylent Green DVD' finds it for $12.
